The meaning of idioms . Idiom is an expression, words, or phrase that has a figurative meaning that is comprehended in regard to a common use of that expression that is separate from literal meaning or definition of the words of which it is made . 1. GOING OUT ON A LIMB Meaning : Put yourself in a tough position in order to support someone or something . For example : "Lulu is going out on a limb to help Azwan do his homework when she should have been doing her homework". : "Suzanna parents has going to the overseas and she's going out on a limb to take care her sisters at home". 2. A DIME A DOZEN Meaning : Anything that is common and easy to get . For example : "Nowadays, getting a cellphone is like finding a dime a dozen since it's sold everywhere". : "For Alice getting a top dress is like finding a dime a dozen for this year". 3. FIELD DAY Meaning : An enjoyable day or circumsctance . For example : "For Ken having a bike was like a field day for him". : "For Tifanny hang out with her bestfriend was like a field day for her". 4. A CHIP ON YOUR SHOULDER Meaning : Being upset for something that happened in the past . For example : "Ever since the accident year ago it has been a chip on your shoulder Jim, let it go". : "Watch out for that guy, he's got a chip on his shoulder". 5. DOG DAYS OF SUMMER Meaning : The hottest day of the summer season . For example : "James didn't do anything but sit in his house yesterday since it was dog days of summer". : "He like to watch baseball during the dog days of summer". 6. COUCH POTATO Meaning : Someone who spends too much time watching TV . For example : "You're couch potato, Kristen . You need time to study . : "Don't be like couch potato,Niken . You must focus on your career . 7. CRAM Meaning : Try to learn as much as possible in a very short time . For example : "Donna didn't remember even her study last night because she had to cram all subject". : "Tommorow Julie's have a test for some subject and she had to cram all". 8. CRASH COURSE Meaning : A short course that has the main facts and skills . For example : "Rozyana took crash course in cooking and bought a cafe". : "He took crash course in business and started do project". 9. OVER ONE'S HEAD Meaning : Too difficult or complicated for someone to understand . For example : "A new lecturer teaching style is way over my head, I can't understand what he's talking about". : "A new subject so over my head, I can't force my mind to think about that". 10. CUT IT OUT!! Meaning : Stop doing something(that's annoying) . For example : "Alex cut it out, you disturbing me!". : "The kids are making too much noise . Cut it out !". |
